For the Love of the Animals by Marion - February 2020 Scholarship Essay
I live in Northern New Mexico. It truly is the land of enchantment but due to the poverty level in this very rural part of the country animals end up neglected, abused, and in great need of medical care. There are a multitude of stray dogs, cats and even horses. I plan on becoming a veterinarian because I truly love all animals. I want to help the neglected and overpopulated animals in hometown.
To help the animals I would start a nonprofit organization that would benefit animals and the people who love them. I would like to start a nonprofit that helped the neglected, abused, and homeless animals of Northern New Mexico. I would like to have a free animal hospital that provided free sterilization, vaccinations, and general care for domesticated animals in Taos County. Ideally I would include a re-homing service for not only dogs and cats but also horses. This nonprofit would provide a necessary and humane community service.
My animal program would partner with the already existing Humane Society, Stray Heart Animal Shelter, Feral Feline Friends, Spirit Horse Sanctuary as well as any other groups in the area that could help with this enormous problem. I know with a more coordinated effort we could find more success. I also believe that is imperative to have up to date and caring animal care and that all parties involved have to be in it for the right reasons.
My nonprofit would benefit the animals it served but it would also benefit the people who love these animals but are unable to properly care for them. It would benefit the wild animals and their habitat that has been destroyed by the abundant stray animals. Ultimately my nonprofit would serve the community of Taos County.
