All you need is a little help by Mario - May 2019 Scholarship Essay
From an impoverished country to near graduation, I have seen what life is like for a person who doesn’t have all the resources they need to be successful in today's world. I have seen people struggle with life decisions such eat or put gas to get to school! I have seen people not go to school because of intimidation due low self esteem and I’ve seen current university students struggle with tuition or medication. I know this first hand, because I have experienced this. My ultimate objective here is to stop people from worrying about money issues and help them excel at school, nobody should ever have to worry about food, medicine or school expenses.
If a donor gave me money to improve my community, I would help establish a food pantry for students, and have it stocked with healthy food, such as fruit snacks, Rice and mixed veggies, and sandwiches. I’ve seen food pantries at my university, and it has unhealthy food and students don’t need that. They need to feed their brains, and if they eat well, they can study and focus well. I myself nearly went hungry my junior year of college, I had to make a choice. Put 17 dollars of petrol in my car and eat a value meal item from McDonald's being at ¾ of a tank. Or put everything and not eat. No student should ever go through that. I want to end student hunger! And it is a serious problem in our schools! If you eat well, you’ll remember well and therefore do well!
With the rising costs of medicine, we have been presented with the dilemma. Can I afford my Zoloft for the month that ranges about $250 here in the United States and it’s $10 in Mexico? Which is what a college student makes at a 19 hours per week jobs. I would set up a program, that is within the confines of the law to take students to Mexico to see doctors, which cost about $2.50 for a GP or $30 for a specialist. Which in the United States would cost you about 300 dollars for just the visit. I would want students to be able to afford their medications. No student should work just for their medication. This way the student benefits from working and saving up.
If anyone has gone to school in the information age, they will know how much software costs for school. An accounting textbook runs about 400 dollars, and software licenses run 150 for 2 years. Accounting classes come in 2 parts, and that comes up to a total of 950 dollars for the length of the classes. We need to ensure students have all the materials they need to participate in class. Computers, tablets, or even Scantron and a printer. Students should be able to do their classwork without rental times. When my computer broke, I wish I could’ve been given a computer to be able to do assignments, so that is why everybody should be able to get what they need to do well and participate.
As I went through my life growing up, I saw what not the tools for success having can do to you. It can hinder your performance significantly. And if I can help in anyway to my local community. I would give them everything they need because nobody should ever pick between medication and food. As they are both needs, they shouldn’t be sacrificed. Nobody should ever have to suffer what I went through. And I wish I could prevent it.
