Crowns and Capes by Marile - September 2019 Scholarship Essay

If I had the opportunity to create an extracurricular activity, I would create Capes and Crowns. This club would involve going to hospitals dressed as different characters and visit children in hospitals. Being in the hospital is not enjoyable at all, especially for the children who spend months at a time in the hospital for long term illnesses. Unfortunately, we would not be able to take away their pain, but at least we would be able to provide a distraction from their hospital stays. I would create this club because these kids have to go through things that I can not even imagine going through, and I would love to help them in any way possible. Being sick and stuck in a hospital is extremely difficult and this club would show that we understand what they are going through and we want to help them in whatever way we can. The whole purpose of this club would be to help alleviate some of the stress that both the family and the children are going through. To make the club more beneficial, we could hold fundraisers to get new costumes of different characters, and we could bring them gifts around the holidays. I think this club could open people who are my age to real problems that little kids and their family have to deal with everyday. Just thinking about being able to make these children who are suffering in the hospitals smile even for just a little is enough for me to say this extracurricular activity is an amazing idea to create. The families of these children will be able to see their children happy and having fun and will give them hope. This is the perfect idea for an extracurricular that could benefit these families. I have always loved working with children, and I think this club is a perfect fit for me. I understand the difficulties that would come up, such as making sure nobody gets sick, but I think this could be a productive activity. High schoolers would get to explore this field and possibly discover new interests for their future. This experience would make you more appreciative for all that we have in life, and limit the complaints we make every day. Crowns and Capes would be the perfect extracurricular if you are someone who loves to help in your community.
