My Gap Year Without Limitations by Mariam - August 2019 Scholarship Essay
A gap year is a time when high school graduates postpone a year from college to do other activities. These activities can include working or traveling . My ideal gap year, without limitations on money, would be to travel the world for a few months then work at an airline for the summer months.
I would travel first to Machu Picchu in Peru because the history that this place holds is amazing and has stunning architecture. I would then travel to Guyana because that is where my mother and father are from. I want to experience what my mother in particular experienced while she was growing up for a little time. I would then take a trip to the Dominican Republic to visit Nueva York Chiquito and Cano Dulce. I completed a community service trip during the summer of 2018 for twenty one days. A team of people and I built a bottle house in Nueva York Chiquito and planted banana trees in Cano Dulce to add revenue for the community. This was the most eye opening experience I have had in my life because it allowed me to see how other people live in developing countries.
After traveling to these places I would attempt to get an occupation at an airline in order to become exposed to the aviation job market. This can be a simple job such as a baggage handler or an airport clerk. I would do this to amass experience and gain a larger network of people in the aviation field. My occupation goal would be to become an aerospace engineer because I enjoy working with my hands and on aircrafts.
This is what my gap year would consist of. First, I would travel to different places in the world such as Machu Picchu, Guyana, and the Dominican Republic. Then I would apply to any job in an airline.
