How I Would Make the Most Out of a Gap Year by Margaret - August 2019 Scholarship Essay
If I had the opportunity to take off a year while attending college, I would try to get a job or an internship at a small or mid-sized architecture firm in the Charleston, South Carolina area. I would be learning about building residential homes and vacation homes in that area. I love the area as my family has vacationed there numerous times. It would be amazing to build homes there that do not interfere with the natural environment. I would learn so much, and it would be so exciting to actually use what I have been learning in college.
Another advantage of getting a job during a gap year would be making some money to use to pay for college. It would be a challenge to live in the Charleston area as it is very expensive, but I do have family and friends there with whom I could live.
Travelling from there would also be fun in that there are quite a few islands to visit and historical areas such as Savannah where I could explore its architecture and learn the city's history.
Also, volunteering during that period of time would be a lot of fun. There are numerous animal shelters in the area where I would give time to care for dogs and cats needing new homes. All in all, a gap year could be a very interesting and valuable experience to carry forward in my college education.
