Social Media's Impact
My freshman year self would have never known that I would be missing a year and a half of my high school experience. And during that year and a half, my relationship with technology, especially social media, has changed drastically. On one hand, social media may have been the only reason I passed the classes I did. But on the other hand, it may have restricted me from reaching my highest potential.
Boring zoom calls and unresponded emails to teachers. When I felt my reputation as a high-achieving student slipping through my hands, I turned to social media. There I found other students like me. Even sitting alone at my dining room table, hours in front of a computer, I knew I wasn’t truly by myself. These people on social media, like youtube, gave me tips and tricks on different school subjects that were able to get me straight A’s all through online learning.
Now even though social media might have saved my high school career, there were also disadvantages it had on my learning. Those boring zoom calls just could not hold my attention. And like a lot of my other peers, I fell to the temptation of TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and whatever other social media platform it is. These distractions inhibited us from gaining or retaining the information that was being given to us at that moment.
So who knows. Maybe if I wasn't distracted by social media I wouldn’t have had to depend on it later to teach me important information. I just know that social media will keep evolving and changing. And whether it comes with more advantages or disadvantages, I will make sure that it ends up impacting my life in a positive way.
