Mamaw Joy by Makenzi - May 2022 Scholarship Essay
My grandma was one of the most important people in my life. She has taught me so many things along the way. She is the reason I am writing this essay. Not only has she always been there for my ups and downs, but she also always encouraged me to do what I loved. She was always making a difference. She was kind, and selfless. She even encouraged those who she did not know well. She was the definition of love.
My grandma passed away 7 years ago. It still feels like it was just yesterday. It was one of the hardest times of my life. Depression and anxiety quickly overran my body. This lasted years. I would find myself forgetting to eat, crying constantly and just not being able to get through the day. I knew it was getting worse and had to change something.
One day it came to me. She wouldn’t want me to be like this. This would not make her happy. She does not dwell on depression and self-pity. So, I began to stand tall and pick up the pieces where I left them. I overcame my weaknesses because of her strengths! I went to college and graduated with an associate degree in Surgical Technology. I now am going back to school for nursing. She is the reason why I am going back. If I can help those around me who are in pain, I know I can make a difference.
