Helping People Through My Own Experiences by Madison - November 2016 Scholarship Essay

I’m not in college yet so I won’t really know what I’m thankful for until later after my college life. What I hope to be thankful for though is that college is going to help me acquire a degree in my specific field of interest so I can pursue a career that I want and enjoy. Going to college will also give me the knowledge I’ll need for my career and provide experiences that will help me throughout my lifetime. Another reason why I’ll be thankful for college is the experience my mom has went through due to not finishing college. The final reason I’ll be thankful for is that I’ll be able to help people because of the experiences I’ll gain through my college life. I want to go to college so I can have an amazing degree in psychology that will enable me to pursue a career as a teen psychologist.
In college I want to major in psychology and become a teen psychologist. I decided this was the career I wanted when I was 15. I wanted to help teens and influence them as well. Going to college will get me the degree I want and then I’ll be able to have the job I aspire to and be truly happy that I’m doing something that I’ve wanted to do for almost four years now. I hope to be thankful for this because going to college is the only way I can follow my passion of psychology and helping teens. Going to college will also help give me the experience and knowledge I’ll need for life.
College is full of experiences, good and bad. I know that all my experiences will teach me something. I’ll learn from my mistakes. As I grow older I realize that my mom made a lot of bad decisions when it came to going to college. My mom registered for the first two colleges she wanted to attend and then didn’t go. The third college she went to, she dropped after a few classes and her last college she dropped out without getting her degree even though she was almost finished. This lack of commitment continued throughout her life. She had trouble keeping a job and the jobs that she had didn’t pay very well. She’s almost 40 and has nothing saved toward retirement. I learned from my mom’s mistakes that education is important and you should set your goals high and pursue them until you have reached the best potential for you. I am committed to making the most of my college experience and reach my full potential as an individual. I know that many teens have had the same experiences that I have had and I have a real desire to help teens like me maneuver through tough situations.
I didn’t realize until I was 15 what impact anxiety had on my interaction with fellow students, performance in school and family relationships. I started going to therapy in my second semester of junior year and she helped me deal with some of my anxiety and my family relationship issues. There are many other teens that have to deal with the similar situations that I have experienced and later in life I want to help teens cope with the things they’re going through. By going to college I’ll be able to get a degree in counselling psychology and be happy that I have a career that I love and where I get to help teens every day. All of these reasons are things I hope to be thankful for after college because they will have given me great knowledge and taught me important life lessons.
As I begin this journey into college I’m excited about the educational and personal growth from the experiences these years will provide. The knowledge I’ll gain will help me to be happy in the career I want and give me the skills I will need not only in my professional career but also my personal life as well. I’ll learn from my mom’s mistakes and my own and grow into the person I want to be. Every day after college I will be so thankful for the opportunities it has given me to help teens who are struggling and help them deal with their issues to the best of my ability. I’m looking forward to college and know that I will learn so much throughout the years and will be able to use the knowledge I gain for the rest of my life.
