New Beginnings by Madalyn - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
“New Beginnings”
What does January 1st mean to you? To some people, it’s simply just the first day of a new year, to others it’s time to buy a new calendar, but to individuals with a bad habit or a desire to do more with his/her life, it is motivation to stop the bad habit or to simply do more. This year, my new year’s resolution is to live with a healthier lifestyle. Beginning my first semester of college this past fall, I wasn’t the most involved student. I woke up, went to class, came back to my room and studied; that is how my days usually went. I missed home; I had no intention of making new friends or trying to find other activities to keep me occupied. I kept my grades up, but I was unhappy while doing so.
This year, I am making it a point to diminish the negative thoughts and surround myself with positivity. Every morning I plan to wake up and write down on a piece of paper what I have to look forward to that day, rather than waking up and dreading the forthcoming day. I plan to make the best out of everyday, rather than dragging through the week only so I can reach the weekend. My goal is to live a life where I don’t have to wait for the weekends or school breaks to enjoy myself. I plan to enjoy myself everyday in someway.
In order to achieve these New Year’s goals of mine, I need to live a healthier life style. Positivity is the beginning of this life style. With positive thinking, it is easier to motivate myself into living more healthy. I will start my days by waking up early and doing something active before class, whether it’s doing fifty jumping jacks or running a mile. This will help me wake up and start my day with confidence and positivity. On my walk to class I will think of all the positive things in my life in order to remind myself that life is good. I plan to eat healthier as well.
With the amount of positivity and healthy living styles I surround myself in, it will be a lot easier for me to live a happier life. A happier life typically leads to a better job in school. Not only does the positivity lead to better grades in school, but it also allows me to be more excited about my classes. College is supposed to be a difficult, but enjoyable experience. Living a negative life style will not get me anymore which is why I find it so important to stay positive, healthy, and happy throughout my time in school. So for me, January 1st is much more than starting a new calendar; January 1st is the beginning of something new, something spectacular. January 1st is a time for change. January 1st is motivation.
