Teaching The Past by Luke - March 2020 Scholarship Essay

When you ask a small child what they want to do with their life, they often say things like: Astronauts, Fire Fighter or Police Officer. I would have looked up from my Time Life history books, and promptly told you that I wanted to be like the men in the black and white pictures; I wanted to be remembered. Since then, I have become content with the idea of studying those people I who have read so much about. My 10-year career plan is to become a historian, working to expand people’s knowledge of history.

The first step of my plan is to attain batchers off the Arts in History. I plan to focus in US History, European History, or History of War. All of these focuses are offered at The University of Oregon, where I am likely to attend. It is the best school for history in my home state of Oregon. I was hoping to attend The College of William and Mary, but thus far I have not heard back from them. However, I am confidant that attending the University of Oregon will give me an exquisite education I can use to peruse my passion for history. The next step will be attending grad school.

I dream of attending grad school at a prestigious East Coast Institution; one of the places where most of our greatest leaders pass through. I want a chance to get one of the best educations you can get in America: a chance to set myself up to make a difference. Places such as Harvard or Columbia University are just a couple of examples of places I dream of attending. They are places that we have all heard the names of. That is not the last Piece of my ten-year plan.

The last part of my ten-year plan is to find a job where I can spread the knowledge of history I will have accumulated to other Americans. I hope I can inspire them to be interested in history; inspire them to know what has happened so we do not make mistakes again and again, for that is insanity. I hope I can help contribute to making a more informed America. That is my ten-year plan.

My ten-year plan is to obtain a Bachelors of Arts In history, a Masters Degree in history, and start teaching history to great Americans. At the end of the day, we all want to make a difference and I think, with some monetary assistance, I will have the chance to follow the path I outlined above. Then, I will know I made a difference.
