Dine With Me Mr. Annabel Lee by Loquatia - February 2016 Scholarship Essay
There are many authors that I would definitely love to sit down and have a nice chat with. Since I am an avid reader, so people like Charles Dickens, Shakespeare, and Jane Austen are some who I feel would make for an interesting and exciting dinner partner. However, the one author who I wish that I could go back in time and sit down with is Edgar Allan Poe.
Why does Poe interest me? Poe is known for his dark, a little twisted, and awesome mystery tales. Almost everyone have read “The Tell-Tale Heart”, “The Fall of the House of Usher”, “The Raven”, and the poem Annabel Lee. His works are so timeless that it is expected before entering college that you have read some form of Poe. Truthfully, Poe’s artistic ability would make me read him even out of class settings (but maybe because I am an avid reader). I love the dark literature that Poe brings to the table. From suspenseful scenes to a woman who kills with her treacherous beauty, Poe never fails to leave me in wonderment when reading his works.
Truthfully, Poe’s background is not the reason why I would love a dinner date with him. Indeed a person’s background shape who they are and who they become; yet I believe that even if he was poor and in debt, he still would be able to write such haunting stories. Think about it. The people who usually struggle the most are some of the most influential and entertaining people to exist and I feel Poe falls in those categories. Rather, a dinner date with Poe would be beyond spectacular. I might even go as far as to say that a dinner date with Poe would be better than a dinner date with the famous Shakespeare. Gasp! However, it is the truth. Two twisted people who love terror genres together at one table. That is bound to be a fiasco.
Another reason is I want to be able to hear his ideas and maybe generate new terror filled stories. It would be awesome to be recognized as someone who influenced another compelling story or even co-write it. We could even write spin offs together! Or we could play word association and see what impromptu story lines we could come up with.
Overall, I think dining with Poe would be a spectacular experience. From the conversations to the new stories, even I shiver in my bones from the possibilities.
