I Swear, I Won’t Swear by Lindsey - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

One thing most teens struggle with especially in today’s society is cursing. I know I do not always have the cleanest mouth. Therefore, a New Year’s resolution for 2016 would be to stop swearing. Following through with resolutions are sometimes very difficult. In order to enforce the new “me”, each time I swear, I would look up a new word in the dictionary that I do not already know and use that in place of the curse word. This change would not only make me sound more mature for not using such foul language, but it would also increase my vocabulary.
The enforcement of the resolution would help make me a better student because of my expanding vocabulary. In doing so, I would be able to express myself more thoroughly with better and less offensive words. My writing would be enhanced through the expansion of my vocabulary. Considering my engineering wired brain, I could use all the help I can get in developing and furthering my ability to speak and write.
Swearing is often viewed as offensive. Without swearing, I would be able to improve relationships with fellow students. Increased communication with my peers would create opportunities for me to collaborate, work together, and participate more in classroom discussions. My overall learning experience would be enhanced.
