It Could Happen by Lillian - November 2018 Scholarship Essay

My senior yearbook quote would be “When they said anything is possible I was skeptical. High school made a believer out of me”. This says that I’ve come a long way over the past four years. I went from being an unconfident inflexible freshman to a confident never say die, senior.
I’ve grown up. I’ve learned you never know what is going to happen. You can say all you want that an event will never happen. You can say “I’ll never be able to go to college”, “I’ll never be on the National Honors Society”, or “I will never have amazing grades” but this doesn’t mean it’s true. Once you get past the negativity and start thinking positive obstacles disappear.
If someone came up to me right now and said: “You could never become a New York Times bestselling author.” I would say “don’t bet on that”. In my freshman year, I would have let that convince me to drop out of writing club. I would’ve let that negative statement make me give up. I’ve discovered that there is no harm in trying. If it doesn’t work it doesn’t work, but you’ll never know unless you try.
I discovered this by trying. The first example is when I applied for the National Honors Society. I didn’t want to apply because I was positive I wouldn’t get in. My mom pointed out to me that it didn’t hurt to try. If I didn’t get in that was that I was right. But, I wouldn’t know unless I tried. So, I applied figuring in a few weeks a rejection letter would show up and I could forget about the whole thing. As I was filling out the application I couldn't believe how much I'd actually done. I realized just how good my grades were. "Maybe I can get in." I thought. A few weeks later a letter came. It said I was in.
Since then I’ve tried more. I’ve had more success and I’ve had failure, but I don’t regret either. So many things have happened showing that anything can happen that I can’t wait to see what comes next.
