Describe a lesson you learned from a character in a book or a person in history. by Leo - October 2021 Scholarship Essay

The person in history I learned a lesson from is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I learned from his determination, leadership, and speeches. The message I received from his numerous speeches was "If you work hard towards your dreams, you can accomplish them". Although, there were many people against Dr. King, it did not stop him from sticking to being a leader. I believe it motivated him to fight even harder through all the things that were happening. He made sure others were alright, worked for change, and pushed those around him to do better as well. Despite the struggles he went through, he never gave up on his dream of everyone being treated equally. This inspires me to continue to be a leader, work hard for the things I want, and to remain focus. I also want to fight to end the gun violence that is happening in our day to day life.

Although, there may be some challenges along the way for me being a young black male living in Chicago, I believe I can beat the odds. I do this by doing my best in school, practicing hard in basketball, and making my own money working part time. Living this dream that Dr. King had for everyone to have equal opportunities, motivates me even more to be the best young man I can be, as well as respecting everyone I meet. I am sure if I remain true to who I am and do the right things, I can make a change just like Dr. King did.
