Drive and Dedication: An Exploration of Motivation and Focus by Leanne - April 2024 Scholarship Essay

Dear Scholarship Committee,

I am writing this essay as a declaration of my sincere interest in applying for the Varsity Tutors College Scholarship contest. My name is Leanne Cross, a rising dental hygienist at the University of Michigan, passionately pursuing an advanced degree in Dental Hygiene.

My academic pursuit has always been staples by a profound sense of personal passion and commitment. From a young age, I became fascinated by the healthcare field, particularly dentistry, motivated by the thought of bringing smiles back to people's faces. It was this drive that led me to choose this somewhat challenging and demanding path.

My motivation to pursue my academic goals stems from both my love for the dental field and the desire to help others through my future profession. I am currently a dental hygienist that has practiced for over seventeen years. My passion for dentistry will motivate me through the late nights studying, working, being a mom and teaching my son. I believe that providing healthcare is more than just a profession or economic pursuit; it is a noble vocation of healing, care, and service to humanity.

To stay focused on this trajectory, I've developed a two-pronged strategy. First, I visualize my goal. I consistently remind myself of my commitment to serve as a competent, compassionate dental hygienist who instigates positive change in communities. This constant mental picture of my desired future is an incredibly powerful motivator that propels me, especially during challenging times.

However, while passion is a robust backbone for my academic pursuit, it requires to be anchored on discipline, consistency and a prioritized organization. Thus, the second component of my strategy involves a structured daily routine. This routine includes self-care, a regular study schedule, and moments of leisure, ensuring balance and preventing burnout. I constantly seek to improve by learning from my mistakes and transforming them into stepping stones towards my academic and professional growth.

Another significant factor that strengthens my focus is my community - my professors, my co workers, my family, and friends are an invaluable source of encouragement and inspiration. By consulting with them, exchanging ideas, and offering mutual assistance, I've discovered that the road to my goals isn't necessarily a lonely one, but rather a shared journey filled with collaboration and support.

As I approach my undergraduate with goals to go on to my Master’s, I am excited to commit with the resolve and tenacity that have been my companions so far. Securing the Varsity Tutors College Scholarship would go a long way towards ensuring my continued academic progress and materializing my dream of becoming a dental hygienist.
