The Journey to Making a Difference: My Path to a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology by Lasheika - August 2024 Scholarship Essay
In today's fast-paced world, mental health has become an increasingly critical issue. More people are struggling with mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and various forms of addiction. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated these issues, with isolation, uncertainty, and stress contributing to a global mental health crisis. My next big educational goal is to finish my bachelor's degree in Psychology, driven by a strong desire to help people overcome their different difficulties, including self-medicating behaviors that often accompany these disorders.
My decision to pursue a degree in psychology was influenced by a combination of personal experiences and a deep-seated passion for understanding human behavior. Growing up, I witnessed friends and family members struggling with mental health issues. Seeing their pain and the impact it had on their lives ignited a spark in me to learn more about the mind and find ways to help. Influential figures, such as my high school psychology teacher and various mental health professionals I encountered, further solidified my interest in this field. Their dedication and the positive changes they brought about in their patients' lives inspired me to follow a similar path.
The journey through my psychology program has been both challenging and rewarding. Each course and project has contributed to a deeper understanding of the complexities of the human mind. Classes on Developmental Psychology, behavioral therapy, and more have been particularly impactful. These courses not only provided theoretical knowledge but also practical insights into diagnosing and treating mental health disorders. Participating in research projects has allowed me to explore specific areas of interest, such as the effectiveness of different therapeutic interventions for anxiety and depression. For instance, a research project I conducted on the impact of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) on anxiety levels provided me with valuable insights into holistic approaches to mental health care.
One of the primary reasons I chose psychology was the desire to address the issue of self-medication among individuals with mental health disorders. I watched my father self-medicate his mental health issues, and my auntie struggled similarly. All because, in the Black community, seeking help was shown as a sign of weakness and taboo for us to go sit on a "shrink's" couch. This cultural stigma often prevents individuals from seeking the professional help they need, leading to harmful coping mechanisms such as substance abuse. Self-medicating, whether through substance abuse or other harmful behaviors, is a common but dangerous coping mechanism. It often exacerbates the underlying issues and can lead to a cycle of dependency and worsening mental health. Through my studies, I have learned about the importance of early intervention and the various therapeutic techniques that can help individuals develop healthier coping mechanisms. For example, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has proven effective in helping individuals reframe negative thoughts and behaviors, providing them with healthier alternatives to self-medication.
A psychology degree equips me with the tools necessary to make a real difference. Understanding cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and other evidence-based treatments allows me to offer effective support to those in need. These therapies focus on changing negative thought patterns and behaviors, teaching individuals to manage their symptoms more effectively. Additionally, my training includes learning how to conduct assessments and develop personalized treatment plans, ensuring that each person receives the care they need. I have also gained experience in group therapy settings, which can be particularly beneficial for individuals who feel isolated in their struggles.
Looking ahead, I envision a career where I can make a significant impact on the lives of others. Whether working in a clinical setting, providing one-on-one therapy, or participating in community outreach programs, my goal is to contribute to the well-being of those struggling with mental health issues. In the long term, I hope to specialize in addiction counseling, focusing on helping individuals break free from the cycle of self-medication and achieve lasting recovery. I also aspire to advocate for mental health awareness and reduce the stigma associated with seeking help, as societal attitudes towards mental health play a crucial role in individuals' willingness to seek treatment.
In conclusion, completing my bachelor's degree in Psychology is a crucial step towards achieving my goal of helping people overcome their mental health challenges. The knowledge and skills I gain through this program will enable me to provide effective support and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. By addressing issues such as self-medication, depression, and anxiety, I hope to contribute to a society where mental health is prioritized, and everyone has access to the help they need. Ultimately, my journey in psychology is about more than achieving a personal goal; it's about making a positive impact on the world around me, one person at a time.
