The "Yes" That Changed My Future by Madelyn - March 2026 Scholarship Essay

A couple of years ago, one of my teachers asked if I would be interested in tutoring a few students who were struggling in various subjects. Initially, I was nervous about the idea, worried that I would struggle to answer their questions or explain things clearly. However, my desire to help these students succeed outweighed my nerves, so I decided to say yes to the challenge.

After tutoring a couple of times, my anxieties vanished. I quickly became confident in my abilities to teach the students. When a student had a problem, I was able to break it down into smaller, easier steps or explain it in a way that made sense to them. On top of that, I was able to give them tips to help them succeed, including practicing problems and reviewing notes more often.

In just a short time of tutoring, I began to see the fruits of my labor. The students' grades improved, and those who were once struggling would gain confidence and be able to proudly solve problems on their own. It is also very rewarding to see the students’ eyes light up in the moment when something I am teaching them finally clicks in their minds.

Throughout my three years of tutoring, I slowly realized something about myself; I absolutely love teaching. There is almost nothing more fulfilling than seeing a student get excited about understanding something that you taught them. This love for teaching led me to develop a passion to become a teacher, where I can do what I love for a career. I want to instill in students a love for learning and make a tangible difference in their lives.

When I walked into the classroom on my first day of tutoring, I had no idea that what I was about to do would change the course of my future. What started as a “yes” to helping out a few students ended up being the inspiration for my future dream that I am hoping to pursue.
