Leadership in College by Ku'uhiaonani - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
Scholarship, Service, Character and Leadership. These are the four pillars of the National Honor Society. However, I remember these ideals being drilled into me since grade school. In grade school, they tell you to be honest even if it’s the hardest thing to do and to always help those in need. That takes leadership. In high school, they tell you to take control of your future and lead those behind you. Above all, show them character because actions speak louder than words. This also takes leadership. Whether it was underclassmen, a sports team, or even if you were an older sibling- you were always leading whether you liked it or not. The difference between leading and leadership is the fact that leadership entails that you have accepted the responsibilities set forth in front of you and are ready to build up those who follow you.
In Sociology there is a phenomenon known as Anomie, a state of normlessness. This is an experience that mostly all students go through because this is the first step to doing things for yourself. You are surrounded by a new environment of people who could care less about what you do. Now, in college, there is no one else to lead but yourself. It’s easy to think you can get away with skipping class because it effects no one else, but leadership is also taking responsibility for yourself. In Cooking, cleaning, buying groceries, and forcing yourself to the best and get the best grades you can for yourself. Succeeding in college takes dedication that comes from knowing how to lead. You have to be a scholar for you, you must want to serve for the benefit of others, and you must provide a strong character to be strong for yourself. You must lead yourself to success. Leadership will bring success in college.
