Mr. President by Krista - February 2016 Scholarship Essay

It is my honor to have a historical figure over for dinner, and I have chosen to invite the twenty-sixth president of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt. There is no man or woman who has lived more than this man. No other person can match his level of intelligence, as well as productivity. And I know for a fact that he has more stories than any other president of the United States.
As a child, Theodore Roosevelt lived in New York City, a place where life was famous for being easy. Roosevelt knew this and when he got older, he ventured into the wilderness with his Rough Riders, as if to prove his manliness to those who hated him for his wealthy and modern roots. He grew up with a weak immune system and a mother who coddled him. But he was labeled an eccentric for always being on the move. If it existed back then, Theodore Roosevelt would be labeled with Attention Deficit Disorder. I am inviting Roosevelt over for dinner because I identify with him in that I have lived my life indoors and want to tackle adventures for no good reason.
As far as his politics go, Roosevelt exhibited, at the very least, admirable action. He was president in possibly the most important time in American history. As a Republican of the time, he was expected to keep government small. He went against the norm by following his conscience, requiring better working conditions of companies and taking down the biggest monopolies. People of the time may have been angry, but the man did something few politicians can do—he “reached across the aisle,” working with Democrats. In fact, it was the last man one would think who created the Progressive Movement, a movement driven by modern-day Democrats. Theodore Roosevelt was a man in every sense of the word and should be regarded and respected as such.
I am quite excited to be having the best president the United States has ever seen over for dinner. I am going to need a lot of meat.
