Aim to Excel by Kourtnei - June 2016 Scholarship Essay
Though I was not in the top ten percentile of my high school, I never truly struggled with my school work. Each subject that I passed came to me easily, making me believe that I could naturally pass through college with minimal effort. My first semester of college was a rude awakening. Where in high school I could have gotten away with not studying, I was struggling to keep up with the curriculum of my classes and had trouble prioritizing my time.
After my first failed assignment I began to adjust my habits. Instead of going out with friends, I began to study with them. When I had extra time I started making note cards to quiz myself for an upcoming exam and became more organized with how I wrote down notes during class. Not long after I had made these changes, I started to see results in my grades. Not only did I do better in my classes, but I was also making better grades than I did in high school. Instead of merely coasting through my school work, I excelled at it.
If I had not struggled through my first semester of college I would have never achieved as much as I had in my classes, as well as in my extracurricular activities. After this experience I learned that even though a subject or activity may come easily to a person, they can never truly excel without pushing themselves to work hard.
