Education Abroad by Kimberly - March 2016 Scholarship Essay
Studying abroad is a life enlightening experience that I suggest every college student do at least once. All of the people I've met who have studied abroad said it was life changing. While studying abroad, you learn things about culture and unity that you would never have the chance to learn while studying only inland. Whether studying abroad should be required, is debatable.
Studying abroad could possibly be required more for specific majors. That being said, it would make sense to have particular majors require students to study abroad once or more times. These majors would most likely include human relations, anything involving social work, history majors, literature majors, and anything related. This requirement would most likely exclude math and business but that is also debatable because studying abroad is always educational.
Another issue to take into consideration, is the expense of studying abroad. With the current cost, it's understandable why it is not more popular. If it was made more affordable, even if it wasn't required, more people would probably study abroad. Many people want to but it's not an option because they're having trouble paying college expenses already.
If studying abroad if not required, it should at least be strongly encouraged. Studying abroad helps open our minds that seem to forget that there are places that are completely different than America. We have other worlds all around us and seeing them helps build appreciation and gratitude for all that takes place on Earth. You realize how these other people feel and live. They all have a story, just like you. Even if the focus of a studying abroad trip is scenery, you can still be taken back by how beautiful our world can be. The educational and psychological benefits should be advertised more to help encourage more students to take part in these life changing experiences.
