A Shot at an Archery Club by Kia - September 2019 Scholarship Essay
My dream high school extracurricular activity would be an archery club. Throughout high school I found myself attracted to this more unusual sport. Having asthma I was resigned to sitting on the sidelines for most of the more physically demanding activities throughout my school years. Archery however, was the perfect mix of physical prowess, mental concentration, and achievement. When I was able to practice I got into a zone of peace and tranquillity never felt in other activities. It was also a great bonding time. Since I had no place to practice my father would take me out back to the expanse of desert and together we would shoot. I was given all the proper equipment and training and every day I was able to shoot was another day of freedom and connection. I believe that other people could also find the beauty of this sport if only given the opportunity. The club would be a place of togetherness. Learning to properly handle a protective tool while working on skills that would benefit them for a lifetime. Core strength, arm strength, hand eye coordination, and control are just a few of the skills that are invaluable to mastering a bow. It would also offer a unique experience for those on the less athletic and more social club seekers. Shooting is extremely calming however, the archery field is a great place for conversations. It's an incredibly solo activity but has the power to incorporate others since you stand in a stationary position surrounded by others. If this club had existed I think I could have found a community that shared a special bond. I would love for current and future children to have that opportunity.
