Underestimated to much. by Kia - January 2018 Scholarship Essay

For years I was told that my life wasn't going to go anywhere but down. I was raised in a family where you had to work to get anything that you wanted. This meant working at the age of twelve and not caring about how other kids acted or cared. As I grew up working on cars and trucks with my dad which started the path into what I wanted to do as a future. Currently, I am on my way to getting a associates degree in welding.
When I first walked into class I got many stares from all the guys in my class. At that point, I was the only girl taking the class. I didn't let that bother me though. For many years it has happened to me whenever I walk into any place mainly dominated by males. I get the regular things said to me like " You shouldn't be here" or "I think you're in the wrong class". Most the time I just look at them and then pay attention to the teacher. Most guys underestimate me when I come into the classes but at the end, I come out as the top of a class proving them wrong. Females can be in this line of work and be proficient in it all. When picking a word to describe me I would have to pick underestimated just cause it happens to me every day of my life and in the end, I prove people wrong.
