Her, You, or Me? by Kasei - November 2016 Scholarship Essay
Given the fact that it is college application week at my school and Thanksgiving is approaching, all the teachers have told their classes what they were most thankful for in college. Most of the answers were along the lines of knowledge and social lives, but I don't think either of those are what I am anticipating college for.
College gives anxious eighteen year olds the opportunity to be independent for the first time; however, they all quickly realize that they are required to buy their own toilet paper and come crawling back. Most of these teenagers don't understand what independence is about. I think that I'll be the most grateful for college independence because it will give me the chance to find out who I really am.
My high school years I spent changing from the lazy girl who wears leggings and sweatshirts everyday to the preppy girl who has curled hair everyday. I haven't found my happy medium yet. I haven't found me. I see the pretty girls with the great smiles, and I aspire to be that. Or, I used to aspire to achieve that. Now I've realized that I just want to be who I am supposed to be.
College independence would give me the freedom and time to figure out who I am. There wouldn't be anyone constantly breathing down my shoulder if I changed my look. Also, college is a fresh start. Most of the people I meet in college won't have gone to high school with me. They would not known who I was trying to be before I decided to just be me. I enjoy thinking about that aspect of college life. I can't wait for it.
