Being Comfortable in my own Skin by Kamara - May 2022 Scholarship Essay
During my early educational years, I grew up in a town full of those who didn't look like me, where I was fixated on conforming. Blending in, and not utilizing my voice. Today, having moved to a diverse county, where I interact with many cultures, I've developed a bubbly persona and am comfortable in expressing myself. Being a teacher's assistant for the Technology Education course at my school emphasized the importance of being a leader in a community and helping those in need of service. With this position, I've been able to collaborate alongside the teacher and assist in engineering project planning to help bridge the academic gap in my community. Tutoring concepts to classmates in need of support and simplifying procedures of the design process of projects allows others to further academically. I've also demonstrated these leadership skills by being a member of multiple honor societies including the Science National Honor Society as well as serve as a team member at my local Chick-fil-A. I've enjoyed being a leader in my community as I've acquired over 200 volunteering hours including my experience serving as the Vice President of Tutoring in the Minority Scholars Program.
Immersing myself in challenging courses and receiving Honor Roll each semester has encouraged me to pursue my interest in studying computer science with a focus on software development. In my career, I hope to create secure, accessible, and enjoyable digital services for consumers, as the world continues to showcase quick rates of technological advancement. My goal is to create a positive impact in the world through my development of technologies that can provide solutions to the lives of others and assist those in need. People that share a similar coat of melanin like mine will feel supported by my work, as I bring inclusivity and individuality into the tech world. Similar to my service as the teacher's assistant, I hope to provide efficient technological tools through coding to assist individuals to simplify projects. In parts of the world. I hope for the applications I design to analyze the needs of my community and bring forth a result towards change.
Although challenges may arise, I know that perseverance is key to reaching my true potential. The Varsity Tutors Scholarship will help me achieve my educational goals by expanding my knowledge while I develop a deeper love for the technological world as a future software engineer. With my work and service in communities of need, I'll make a positive impact within the technological scenery.
