"Well, that was NOTHING like Pretty in Pink." by Kaitlin - November 2018 Scholarship Essay
Pretty in Pink is a family favorite in my house, so I was fully prepared to have a cute nerd be secretly in love with me, a popular boy ask me out, and have a cool job. Essentially, I was expecting John Hughes to direct my life, ultimately he did not get the call. Though I thought I was ready to conquer the world of movie high school, it is nothing like that. When I watch movies that revolve around high school, I may get disappointed that it doesn't happen to me, but after some thinking, I wouldn't be able to handle the sort of pressure Molly Ringwald encounters. Love triangles AND AP classes, I don’t know how I could balance. In the end, I would much rather focus on my academics than a boyfriend. My academics influence my future success whereas a boyfriend … I’m not really sure what a boyfriend would do for me, or how he would affect my future. Despite not being a modern Andie Walsh, I am very lucky to have a solid group of friends. I think they provide me with more support and less heartbreak than one boy would give me. My quote holds a disappointed tone and a relieved tone as well because a love triangle sounds fun and desirable until you delve into the details of it all.
It’s nice to dream about, but you would never actually want to be the star of high school movie, even Ferris Bueller had his off days around his ‘Day Off’. I am very pleased with the normality of my life and the lack of a John Hughes influence. A passion of mine is film and looking at the pop culture’s claimed classics, like Pretty in Pink, so this quote perfectly highlights who I am and underlines my interests. I’m glad to have a real life while in high school, it prepares me for the lack of romanticism in college life. I pray that my life in college will not be anything like John Landis’ Animal House, though it’s a classic like Pretty in Pink, I would never choose to live in the universe that Animal House takes place. My quote perfectly portrays who I am in High School, happy with what I have, I may trail off and want a Molly Ringwald life, but once I think realistically, it all comes together
