Dr. Robert: Criminal Psychologist by Julia - February 2019 Scholarship Essay
So often in the community around me, young black individuals such as myself who are aspiring doctors, nurses, scientists, etc., are overlooked in the sciences. One college in particular that I aspire to attend is Howard University to pursue my dream of being a criminal psychologist. Also, if I were to change my major, Howard University’s Health Sciences division includes the Howard University Hospital and the Colleges of Dentistry, Pharmacy, and as well as Nursing and Allied Health Sciences. I would still have the opportunity to receive education from one of America’s top universities. Not only would I be at a top rate university in terms of academics, but I would be surrounded by endless support and nurturing for a young black woman such as myself.
I have always had an interest and affinity in the healthcare field. I have been able to visualize or plan my future career path throughout high school. My goal in life is to be successful in a career that makes me happy and to be financially stable. This is why I want to pursue a career and further my education in the health field because there is always a demand for healthcare workers, every person needs help. It would allow me to make a significant change in another person's life, which would bring me nothing short of pure happiness. Howard is a national leader in studying health disparities among people of color which would help me achieve my overall goal of providing health care in medically underserved communities locally and abroad. Upon doing research on the study abroad programs, I became intrigued to pursue my dreams of global service with Howard.
Despite the diversity in attending college, I believe it would be easy to surround myself with people as equally ambitious as I am. It would allow me the opportunity to dig deep into my cultural roots and to find independence being away from home. It will allow me to pursue my dream of being a criminal psychologist; to study the views, thoughts, intentions, actions, and reactions of criminals and all that partakes in criminal behavior.
