Learn to forgive by Josie Jane - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
As a women in her early twenties, holding onto anger and resentment can be mentally exhausting. Normally, I do not participate in New Year’s resolutions but this year I decided I would. My resolution for 2016 is to learn how to forgive. I chose this in order to make myself a happier and less emotionally stressed person. I believe that learning how to forgive will make me a better student in 2016 due to the simple fact that it will allow me to focus on my studies by being in better health.
Anger and resentment can take up so much time in somebody’s life. It can easily turn into that person’s main focus for days at a time. Leaving people a prisoner of their own emotions. I am guilty of letting my emotions get the best of me. I would allow myself to get so worked up on resenting people that it would be the only thing I could focus on for days. It is not healthy to carry around such heavy negative emotions. Eventually it starts to take its toll on even those around you.
Deciding to take action and move past bitterness that you hold onto is a choice. Learning how to forgive has been one of my biggest learning experiences yet. I am aware that I may not get the apologies that I seek. I am also aware that I am possibly the only person that still holds resentment in my heart.
I believe that by learning how to forgive those who have hurt me will make me a better student. By learning how to forgive you are freeing so much space for new knowledge in your mind. It will help my health by allowing me to get enough sleep to be able to focus on class lectures and being able to retain information easier. It will also help me to be a better student by allowing me to get my goal oriented personality back on track.
My New Year’s resolution is to learn how to forgive. Learning how to forgive will help me mentally, physically, and academically. It will help me to grow into a better person and regain my friendships back.
