Pep band should be a required class, but it is currently an extracurricular activity at my school. There are varying levels of skill needed to perform an instrument, so those new to band would start with a more accessible percussion instrument such as the tambourine or triangle. Pep band should be required because it brings students together to entertain crowds at sporting events, promotes school spirit, and is a creative outlet.

In Minnesota, the pep band typically plays at hockey and basketball games. There is little room to move around in these venues; however, in states with milder climates, students could perform at outdoor events and improve their physical fitness by coordinating routines and movements with the music.

Pep band, or any musical performance, encourages math skills and exposure to new vocabulary, which also benefits those taking the ACT or SAT exams.

Although we live in a time where many can connect through social media, high school can be an isolating time for many students. By requiring participation in the Pep band, students come together with the common goal of entertaining a crowd. Pep band promotes school spirit and camaraderie.

Finally, for students who want to express themselves through a creative channel but are still determining how, the pep band would provide a positive environment to develop creativity.

In conclusion, there are several benefits to being a member of a high school pep band. Typically this extracurricular activity is an optional class because most students choose if they want to play an instrument or not by the time they are in high school. Some students may fear being made fun of for participating in pep band; however, if it is a required class, all students would be in the same boat. The pep band encourages students to collaborate to perform for their schools' sports events. Pep band also promotes school spirit and is a creative outlet.
