My journey to become a Global Citizen by Joscelyn - July 2015 Scholarship Essay
The first time I flew, I was nine months old. Since then, my mom has always encouraged me to travel and see the world. Because she has pushed me to step out of my comfort zone I now find myself interested in working abroad.
I have dreamed of interning abroad since I was a senior in high school. As I enter into my junior year of college, I find myself anxious to begin the process in studying abroad in Hong Kong. You might be thinking, ‘Why Hong Kong.’ Well, we would be here all day if I were to explain to you why Hong Kong in particular, but my main reason for wanting to go to Hong Kong was to take a step out of my comfort zone. I have been to Europe and Europe is extremely westernized. I knew that if I were to study abroad in Europe, I wouldn’t be pushed to open up to the world around me as much as I would in another country.
Hong Kong is one of the top business capitals in Asia. By interning abroad in Hong Kong I will be able to obtain vital work and cultural experience that I may not be able to obtain in the United States. That is why this is my goal. I want to obtain as much work experience in different environments as possible.
This is my goal and as the days go by and I continue planning my goal, I get more excited! Becoming a global citizen is extremely important to me. I want to see and understand the world that I live in. I want to visit places that may not share the same political views as the United States because I feel that this will teach me about the society I live in.
