The Best Lesson from a Best Friend by Jordan - May 2015 Scholarship Essay
My friends have taught me a lot over the years that we have spent together. However, one of the most important lessons that I have learned from them is to simply take my time on tests and quizzes.
I am always quick to finish and turn in all tests and quizzes; I would rarely go back to check my answer, and I would make many mistakes and get points taken off for these mistakes. I once asked my friend why she was almost always last to turn in her tests and quizzes even though she is one of the smartest people I know. She told me that she always made sure to go back and check her work and work slowly through the questions. The next test, I used all the time allotted and worked slowly through each question. I allowed myself the time to go slow and check each question as I went. Then when I finished, I went back to check my answers and was able to find and fix many of the mistakes I made. That test grade was one of the best I had gotten in recent tests. For once, I was not the first person finished and it did not bother me. My friend’s advice worked out for me. I now take all the time that I am given to go check my work. Many mistakes are fixed and my grades are something that I am proud to have earned. The lesson my friend taught me is a valuable one that I will never forget. I sometimes find myself rushing through tests or quizzes, but I always calm myself down, slow down, and take my time.
I cannot thank my friend enough for what she has taught me over the years. I could never understand why it took people so long for people to finish, when I could rush through in no time flat. However, once my friend opened my eyes to the best way to of making the grades, I understood. I made better grades and was able to take pride in myself and my grades.
