The Purpose of Education by Jordan - April 2015 Scholarship Essay
Education is the single most important aspect of life. Education doesn't necessarily have to be done at a high school or college. Education is learning. Education is finding ways to better yourself, better your life, and better your community or the world.
Don't get me wrong, family is everything. However, one must simply educate his or herself to make sensible choices for their families. One must learn about finances, religion, health, and even politics. One certainly doesn't need a degree in finance to know that if you want to live in a nice house, you must be able to earn a paycheck. You also need to know about saving and spending, I chose to educate myself about finances. I started working when I was twelve years old. I was a referee for soccer games. Then I went to work at a shoe store and then at a gym. I put back a certain amount of my paycheck so I could save it for college. My parents always encouraged college, but refused to pay any out of state expenses. I always dreamed of going to school outside of Texas. I learned that by doing well in high school, I had the opportunity to earn academic scholarships to help offset the expense of college. You see, education is important.
Religion is another important aspect of life. Whether you believe in God, go to a certain church, or don't believe at all requires education. One must be able to support their beliefs with facts or opinions. You may choose to educate yourself about religion by going to church, reading, or learning from others. You see, education is important.
Educating oneself about health is extremely important. My mom's side of the family has a history of heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. I have taken it upon myself to learn about eating healthy, working out, and ways to help inform others about the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Although I took health in high school and I am currently enrolled in a nutrition class, I started eating healthy and learning about diet and exercise in the third grade. Not because I was overweight, but because I played sports and my coach encouraged healthier choices. I don't want to struggle with these diseases or fight those battles when I am older. I want to maintain a healthy lifestyle and I want to be an example to friends and family. You see, education is important.
Politics aren't for everybody. However, I'm a firm believer that every vote counts. I believe one doesn't need to have a degree in political science to stay informed about the people who run our country. I think it's our responsibility to know who and why we are electing a certain person to hold a political office. To gather information about a politician, you can get information from others, newspapers, news programs, or classes. The purpose of educating ourselves about politics is so we know who we are choosing to put in office and hopefully make informed decisions on what is best for our country. You see, education is important.
The purpose of education is to allow you to learn more about the world around you. Education is learning not only about politics, religion, finances, or health. The beauty of education is you can learn about art, travel, and anything that interests you. Education is life changing. You see, education is the most important aspect of life.
