What does success in college or graduate school mean to you? How do you define success? by Jonathan - February 2021 Scholarship Essay
My name is Jonathan Watts and I have wanted to be an engineer all my life even before I quite knew what engineering was. I have always loved to build and design, especially cars. I stared with Lincoln logs and Legos. I grew up drawing and changing the current exterior designs of current car makes. As I grew older, I became interested in ways to make a car function better for air quality and fuel efficiency. My interest in engineering grew when I was able to join the Project Lead the Way Engineering program at my high school. The program helped me to explore aspects of engineering, engineering design, research, and aerospace engineering. I have been on the school’s Robotic team designing and building a robot for First Robotics Competition.
My goal is to become an engineer in the automotive industry. My mother who is raising me alone with the assistance of my family has always advocated the importance of a college education to have a successful start in life. In my high school career, I have had tutoring with varsity tutors to help me succeed in my classes. My long-term goals are a bachelor's and master's degree in mechanical engineering and work for one of the major automakers.
Success is defined for me as self-sufficiency, giving back to my community to help others succeed in their life goals like I have been assisted by family, mentors, and my teachers.
