Moving to the US by Joaquin - May 2022 Scholarship Essay
In 2010, I left my life behind as I embarked on a new stage: I moved from Mexico to the US. When I moved to the US, I encountered several obstacles which restricted my academic growth as well as my social life. However, I was eventually able to bypass these restrictions and emerged more motivated than before.
As I had just moved to a new country, I originally struggled with a massive language barrier. This caused me to not be able to communicate with people which caused me to have a lack of friends. While I already had considerable knowledge of English, it was extremely minimal. However, I was motivated to improve my English which I did by constantly reading. Eventually, I noticed my communication skills in English substantially improved from having a very limited amount of vocabulary to having an extensive vocabulary due to my resilience in wanting to improve my English.
Another way in which I was hindered my immigrating into a new country was by the drastic difference between the school curriculums. When I moved, the school I was in had a vastly different curriculum than my previous school. The main difference for me was the lack of a proper mathematical basis for me. As in Mexico, I wasn’t taught any maths while in my new school we were, I had to compensate for this by working and studying even harder in order to comprehend it. After several hours of studying, I was finally able to catch up with my peers and understand how to properly do maths.
