The Importance of Identity by Jerry - July 2016 Scholarship Essay
While growing up I was constantly picked on for being me. I always questioned myself on what I wanted to do and who I wanted to become as I grew up. Because of this I started questioning everything I did whether it was while doing my artwork or singing, whether it was getting ready for school or just watching television. In everything I did I always asked myself, "Is this something that would make other students pick on me or are the things I'm doing something that would make me accepted by my peers?"
During my freshman year of high school one of my teachers picked up on my behavior and noticed that one day I would be acting a certain way but the next day acting differently. One day he pulled me aside and taught me that I shouldn't be a follower but a leader. He told me that instead listening to what others said about me and trying to adjust myself to their liking I should be me and live my life my way. Because of my teacher I learned that I am the one who decides what happens in my life and only I can determine the outcome of what I do.
