To the College Professors by Jennifer - November 2016 Scholarship Essay

College has it's challenging times and it's rewarding times. As a student in the Exercise Science program at the University of Mary, I know some of the classes can be a little challenging, but it is extremely rewarding when the class if finally accomplished and accomplished well.

The college experience I am most thankful for would be being able to do the hands on class work that is done throughout the junior and senior year within the exercise science program. The professors understand and do their best to demonstrate the important and necessary material that is being taught needs to be learned by performing the skills. I am thankful for my professors and all the work they have put into the program to make sure all of the student understand the material and succeed within the program and out in the real world.

With the hands on portion of the class, students get to administrate clinic testing on classmates in order to practice. Some of the tests we get to administer are VO2 sub max, VO2 max, skin fold testing, balance testing, and flexibility testing.

VO2 sub max and VO2 max tests are close to the same test. A VO2 sub max is a test where an individual starts walking on a treadmill. Every three minutes, or one stage, the speed and the grade of the treadmill is raised. During the test, heart rate is checked every minute and blood pressure is checked at the start of every third minute. The test continues until the individual reaches two consecutive stages with a heart rate over 110 beats per minute. With a VO2 max test, the standards are with same through out the test. The only difference would be the individual keeps going through the stages until he or she can no longer continue.

A skin fold test is a type of a body composition test. An individual is pinched in seven different spots on the right side of the body. Each pinch is measured with a caliper in millimeters. Once each area is measured, they are used to calculate the body fat percentage.

Balancing and flexibility testing is done in order to determine how tight the muscles are within an individual's body and balance is tested in order to determine how strong and individual's muscles are.

Without the professor's teaching and determination, students wouldn't have gotten the opportunity to work hand on within the classroom to get person experience and able to get all of the students prepared for the real world work.
