Conquering Fears by Jazmine - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

Conquering Fear

Every young student goes through stages to find themselves, who they really want to become, what they want to achieve and how they face everyday challenges. High school is where my chapters begin when facing difficult life choices and pathways, as well as keeping in mind what one of my wise teacher have constantly remind me to do. “Fear is nothing more than just a bump in the road that halts us from progression. In overcoming these fears, then can we find our strength and truly become confident with ourselves” says my high school orchestra teacher.

Starting High School was very difficult for me; I was an introverted student that would usually read books in the library, overlooking the rest of the students who sat and talked with their group of friends. I did not participate in group activities in fear of being judged by others. I did however take part in Orchestra. Ever since I was an elementary student I have been fascinated with musical instruments, so in my middle school years I joined the ranks of the violins. Continuing music through high school has been a wonderful experience that has helped shaped me into the person I’ve become today. I have made many lifelong friends that will stand by me and dance to my music.

My orchestra teacher has pushed me to become the best that I can be, with helping me overcome fear. An Orchestra will usually present itself in front of hundreds of people to perform a grand rhythm telling a story of long forgotten composer’s thoughts and feelings. Every one individual is part of the whole experience, if one is out of synch then others will become confused, and ultimately off put the whole rhythm. My biggest fear was messing up in front of a crowd, but all changed when my teacher taught me that fear is a very powerful force that one can overcome. Fear is nothing more than a bump, and taking the risk of strolling up with exhausted muscles is rewarded after with the slow descent.
I learned that taking risks will either be rewarding or end in defeat, but with defeat doesn’t necessarily mean failure but experience. We all learn from our mistakes and gain new knowledge promoting ourselves for next time success. My Throughout my years, taking the advice of my teacher I have accomplished so much that has benefited me. I took risks and conquered my fears.
