Why do you want to go to college? by Jasmine - November 2023 Scholarship Essay
Earning a college degree will provide me with the knowledge, networking opportunities, and resources to pursue my desire to advocate for and support Black women before and after childbirth. First, college provides a sense of knowledge that cannot be obtained with a high school diploma. In college, courses such as psychology, social determinants of health, epidemiology, and nutrition are only offered in college. These courses are important because students learn how to navigate different communities and understand how the healthcare system works.
A college education will also provide a plethora of networking opportunities such as internships, fellowships, and the ability to study abroad. Many universities have alumni fairs, career events, and guest speakers for students and facilities to meet people in their field, gain advice, and build life-long relationships. Additionally, the college provides resources and tools that are essential to building new skill sets. For example, having students run campus organizations, attend conferences in other states to compete with other schools, and peer mentor and coaching for students to have individuals to go to for advice and connection. Attending college will continue my education and allow me to pursue my desire to improve maternal and child health in communities of color. Plus, enjoy college and develop new skills to become a better leader.
