What has been your biggest failure during your education and how has it helped shape who you are as a person? by Jasmine - July 2023 Scholarship Essay

In high school, accounting was something I was good at. When I attended college, I did not understand why I was receiving Cs in my classes when I was good at the subject in high school. I was constantly struggling and failing at a subject that I thought I was supposed to be good at. After conducting research on different majors, I realized accounting was not for me. There was no passion or spark, only failure. After numerous searches for helping others and community work, I landed on public health. A subject I enjoy learning about and understanding with struggling or feeling hopeless.
If you have asked my year old what I would be doing I would have said a certified accounting now a public health specialist and birth worker. According to the CDC, black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy or its complications than white women. My passion is to help black women before, during, and after childbirth. Further, my education and gaining hands-on experience is the way I want to accomplish my goal of creating black-owned centers for black women to come and have a good birthing experience. A place black women feel welcome, cared for, relax and happy. Maternal and child health is my passion, the force that keeps me going to help women that look like me.
