A Childhood Dream by Janelle - February 2019 Scholarship Essay
Dream. A dream can mean multiple things, but it very common among everyone. Whether it is an unrealistic thought or fantasy, a treasured ambition, or aspiration, it is something a person wants but does not have. I, among many others also share a dream, and my dream is to be a doctor. I know it may seem I am being cliché and stereotypical about what I aspire to be as an adult, but I never have been so certain about obtaining this dream that I had, ever since I was just a kid. When I was a kid, I have lived in and out of hospitals the majority of my childhood life. Whether I was there for just a simple check up, test, or surgery, I was always in the hospital. It was my second home away from home. While I was in the hospital, all I could do was familiarize the smell of the disinfectant cleaning supplies they would use every hour, memorize the path to get to my doctor’s office, and come to accept the poking feeling of the needle every time I got my blood drawn. All in all, the hospital is nothing new to me. Soon after being so accustomed to the hospital, I began to wonder what it truly means to be a doctor, and the term I came up with was that a doctor is someone who will help explain the health issue to their patient then help them come up with a solution to fix or learn how to regulate their condition to help them live a normal healthy life. I knew from my earliest memory that I have, I have always had a passion to help people. Regardless if it was helping my mom with groceries, taking care of an ill family member, helping a friend with homework, or just being there to listen, I was always there ready to jump in to help and support. Being a doctor will let me be able to continue my life long passion for helping people. I know that having this dream of becoming a doctor is a passion of mine, but I also know that this dream comes with a long journey of hard work that I will need to continue in order to reach my dream. Becoming a doctor requires a four-year undergraduate degree, four years in medical school, and about three to seven years of residency training before I can actually be able to practice medicine on my own with my own medical license. With this entire process of majority staying in school and getting good grades, I know that I need to take a step back and refocus my attention on finishing my high school education now and getting into college. My college plan is intended to go to a four-year undergraduate university that has a medical program and my intended major Biology. With my intentions of going to college and medical school, it comes at the expense of needing money to be able to fulfill my goals and dream. If awarded this scholarship, I will ensure that I am a successful individual that not only lives up to the potential of being a hardworking student, but also that continues to promise to fulfill my passion of becoming a doctor.
