Morning Motivation by Janelle - January 2019 Scholarship Essay
I am a morning person because I feel that what you do in the morning sets the tone for the remainder of the day. I like to wake up early in the morning, knowing I have the whole day ahead of me. When I get up out of bed in the morning I make my bed because it allows me to complete my first task of the day and starts my day productively. I find it important to start my tasks in the morning because if I finish them early, I feel a sense of accomplishment and am able to better enjoy the rest of the day. In fact, I find that if I wait to complete one of my tasks, I feel a sense of dread and do not feel like I should do anything “fun” because there is unfinished business looming over me.
My method of completing tasks early in the day has been helpful and beneficial on multiple occasions. For example, I may anticipate that a project or assignment may take thirty minutes, but in actuality, it may take me an hour or two to complete the task. Since I do my work in the morning before the day it is due, I am able to accomodate for a project taking longer than expected and am able to devote the time needed to complete it without feeling rushed. I am able to budget my time better as I have the rest of the day to complete additional work. If I were to do work at night and it takes longer than I budgeted, I would end up staying up later than I want to, get less sleep than I intended, and would be tired for the next day.
I also find that I am most productive in the morning because, after getting eight hours of sleep, I feel that my mind is the most clear and free from distractions. If I work at night I feel like I think about things other than what I am working on, and therefore I get distracted and the task takes longer. I feel that being a morning person enhances my time management skills which is not only important because I am a college student, but will also be important for me after college.
