“Why Math” by James - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

As a kid going to school, I was different than most of my peers socially and academically. I always had an interest in mathematics while in school. Most of my friends/peers didn’t like math or struggled in the subject, but for me it was easy to learn it and math just always fascinated me. Therefore, if the roles were switched I would be a math teacher because I love the subject.
Likewise, I am currently a first-year(Freshman) at California State University, Fresno(Fresno State) and I am majoring in Math. Most people when I tell them that I am majoring in math, they always ask, “Why math?” People ask why math because it is a hard subject and most people don’t like it, but i’m not like most people. I love doing math because it is a challenging subject and to be able to solve a problem that I have been struggling with for a while is satisfying to me. With my major, I plan on being a math teacher because I love working with kids and helping people makes me happy because knowing that I helped them understand something that they didn’t know how to do lets me know that I accomplished something.
In conclusion, math is a core subject the is essential part of academic learning. Which is why I want to teach it, so that I can help people learn and understand different equations and formulas that they need to know.
