Overcomer by Jamani - June 2016 Scholarship Essay
Upon transitioning to a different High School I realized the caliber of learning was much different from what I was accustomed to. The first 2 1/2 years of my High School experience I realized majority of the work given did not challenge me mentally. I found myself somewhat in a never ending cycle that did not promote growth. When my family made the decision to move to another county I was apprehensive because this meant I would no longer be in an environment I was comfortable in. This school academic wise was light-years ahead of my previous high school. One subject in particular became very difficult. History. Through my academic career History never posed a problem but my Junior Year at this school truly showed me I will do anything to ensure I succeed.
Having to transition half-way through my Junior Year I thought I would be able to pick up where I left off. Unfortunately, that was not the case. I found myself constantly asking for clarity as well as seeking study advice from both teachers and students. I would study endlessly bugging my older brother to quiz me before each test. I kept telling myself "nothing is impossible." My first test I received the grade of a 48%. My last test on the other hand I received the grade of an 80%. I learned through hard-work and dedication I can determine what I am willing to accept. Either I will fold when things present difficulty or I will fight with all my might. I fought and ultimately overcame! I will take this lesson with me as I step into this new chapter attending college this coming fall.
