Opportunity by Jada - January 2018 Scholarship Essay

Opportunity is a rare thing many people think they don’t receive, but you get opportunities every day. Just by waking up and starting your day is an opportunity, making decisions is an opportunity because you never know what is going to come after you make that decision. Tim Fargo is an American author along with a speaker; he once said “Opportunity doesn’t make appointments you have to be ready when it arrives.” Basically saying you never know when an opportunity that can change your life comes you just have to be ready for that. I want to attend college because I want to break family curses, make my family proud, and to take a leap of faith.
College isn’t just about school all of the time, college can be about finding yourself, growing, and learning. For me I want college to be an experience that I will never forget. I want to attend college to become a better person, I’m planning on moving out of Florida for college I was explore other opportunities that I have. I have already been accepted to my dream school Valdosta State University in Georgia, which is where I will be continuing my education. People have many reasons why they don’t go to college; its either they are scared, it’s too expensive, or they just simply don’t want to go to college. I don’t care about the stereotype people put on college I’m taking a leap of faith and doing it you never know what opportunities may become available to you while you’re in college.
Although I haven’t been to college yet, I do know that college is full of opportunities. You get the option to either live on campus or off campus, you get the chance to take morning or afternoon classes, you get to choose your life at college. Every decision you make comes with opportunities that could help you better yourself in college. Living on campus in college can help you make friends and build sisterhood/brotherhoods. Living off campus can teach your life skills that you may need in the future like paying your bills on time, keeping food in the house, learning how to cook, and living on your own. Choosing early classes cam teach you how to wake up early and being attentive more quickly. Choosing later classes can teach you how to manage your time better. All of these decisions can help you better yourself as a student and a person.
The reason I chose opportunity as my word is because people in my family never had a chance to attend college. I want to attend college and finish because I want to be the first one to break my families curse. I also chose opportunity because December 13, 2017 I was given the best opportunity and that was being able to go to the college of my dreams. Opportunities are out there you just have to have the courage to take that leap of faith. One quote that I will always remember is from Abraham Maslow an American physiologist he said: “In any given moment we have two options to step forward into growth or to step back into safety.”
