The Oasis by Isabella - August 2024 Scholarship Essay
Growing up as one of five children, I have experienced the impact of financial hardship when it comes to access to education, truly shaping my understanding of the value of education. My parents, despite facing their own challenges, have been unwavering in their support, emphasizing the power of education. However, they have been candid about the financial hurdles of pursuing higher education. While they have made so many efforts to provide for me, the truth is that the financial strain of funding a college education is beyond their means. As a first-generation student, I have always done my best to balance my academic pursuits with extensive involvement in various clubs and community service, always striving to make a meaningful impact beyond the classroom.
Just envision a young woman from the desert landscapes of New Mexico traveling over three thousand miles to the ocean. Although it may seem unlikely, that is exactly what adventure I am preparing to embark on. There was always an allure to the idea of running off to become a Marine Biologist and go save the ocean from the horrors of mankind. At the age of seventeen, I had my first encounter with the sea. It was a pivotal moment that left me with a sense of belonging and sanctuary. It solidified my unwavering aspiration to become an Oceanographer to go out and learn everything about the unknown.
My love for science has always been a guiding force in my life. In high school, I excelled in biology, chemistry, and mathematics. I have participated in and led a few science, leadership, and community service clubs. Additionally, I have been on the swim team for five years, not only accomplishing my own singular events but also being a valuable asset to my relay teams. These experiences not only fueled my passion but also gave me a taste of the scientific community and the collaborative spirit that drives it.
I have always believed that the most profound understanding of the ocean can only be achieved through close and personal study. When I was accepted into the Oceanography program at Hawaii Pacific University, it felt like a beacon of hope, presenting an opportunity to truly make a difference offering me a chance to impact the world genuinely. I am eager to immerse myself in a new environment, recognizing it as one of the best places to acquire the knowledge to achieve my aspirations. Before this, I had the great fortune of being able to participate in two diverse scientific internships during the summer. Although they were not directly involved with my now desired field, they provided information that has remained invaluable in the research process and data analysis. I am certain that they will serve me well during my future expeditions and studies.
I strongly believe that earning a degree in oceanography will not only fulfill my personal aspirations but also contribute significantly to the global community. With the knowledge and skills that I will acquire, I aim to advance our understanding of marine ecosystems. My goal is to inspire others to appreciate and conserve our oceans, ensuring that future generations can continue to benefit from the vast resources and beauty they offer.
