A Healthier World by Isabella - February 2020 Scholarship Essay
A Healthier World
If I were to start a nonprofit organization, it would be to promote the importance of primary physicians to the general public. In all areas of the US, many citizens do not meet or have a primary physician. This can quickly become problematic. Many individuals resort to the ER for an issue a primary physician can easily handle at less the cost and hassle. Or instead, some would go to an urgent care facility to be treated but miss out on other vital factors. Most do not understand the significance of having a go-to physician because they feel they cannot afford one, it is not necessary, or they cannot help them. However, it would come to a surprise that not only can they afford one but primary doctors can satisfy their patients in more ways thought possible And if those were to realize all that primary physicians can relieve for a patient, it would make the world a much healthier place.
One, the ER and urgent care facilities do not replace primary physicians. Perhaps one of the most important reasons is that they can only do so much to treat someone. Urgent care facilities only offer treatments for issues that are not major enough for the ER and not minor enough to ignore. ER’s are for major scenarios or instances that need immediate assessment. Both the ER and Urgent care do not have the best ability to refer doctors, diagnose and treat the way primary physicians can. Specialists and staff in those fields and every field of medicine have a specific set of skills and methodologies that they use to treat a patient. One of the ER or urgent cares are essential and necessary, but they are not going to treat a patient the way a primary physician would. Because of this, it can create more harm than good if one does not know where to go to for their complaints.
Primary physicians are crucial because they treat and see the same patients (with, of course, the exception of new patients). This fact allows for the doctor to understand a patient’s health more thoroughly. We all know everybody is different that goes the same, not only metaphorically but literally. If a doctor is aware of the history of their patients, the better they can treat them. This is also important to consider now that mental health concerns are rising. Primary physicians are very much capable of diagnosing and treating mental illnesses. Additionally, primary physicians can treat an array of disorders because it is what they do. They are there to treat patients until it is beyond their control and knowledge; it is then do they refer their patient to a specialist.
If the general public were simply more informed on this matter individuals across the nation can take the step into finding the right primary care doctor for them and live not only a better lifestyle but a healthier one as well.
