Community by Isaac - January 2018 Scholarship Essay

The word that best describes why I want to go to college is community. By attending college I will have a chance to contribute to my community in several ways such as working with children to help their lives, coaching kids through sports in my community to make them better people, and ministering to young adults. The reason why I want to do this is that the world is a troubled place right now with a lot of violence, poverty, and hunger, and we can never have enough strong young Christians changing this world.
Working with children has always been one of my passions. During summers I work at a youth church camp named Lutheran Hills, and it is the most fun that I have throughout the year. I love making campers’ days and seeing them learn more about Christ. One of my favorite memories of this past summer was sitting down with a young boy that didn’t know a lot about Christ and explaining the crucifixion and what it meant to Christians around the world. It blew his mind that someone would be willing to give up their life for countless others. This experience help put forth the beginnings of his belief in Christ. I hope to continue to work in the church camp system for many years to come and make an impact on children's lives just like I did with his.
I also really enjoy sports and I plan on minoring in coaching. What I would do with this minor is either coach for a school or church where I live, or coach for our local Boys and Girls Club and help youth become better people. I can help by being a role model and instilling great values in them. Some of my top life lessons and skills have been learned through sports. I would teach young adults through sports, how to manage their time with school, sports, personal relationships, and with jobs. I also would develop what it means to be a great sport both on and off the field and through sportsmanship show the love Christ showed others. I also will be able to minister to some of these young adults and lead others the know Christ and make their lives so much better.
Finally, I plan to major in youth ministry and from that I hope to minister to any youth I come across. I not only can help mold young adults into people that will go out and change the world but I might also help teach them about Jesus and the Bible. I hope to take kids on yearly mission trips to show them what the power of Jesus can do in the hands of many people that might not be strong on their own, but are strong together. Missions can teach them how to treat other people in the world that are less fortunate than they are and could help them become more humble. These trips might also contribute to their success in the future by showing them what they can do with the power of Christ and teamwork.
I have many plans in my life to spread the word of Jesus throughout the youth in my community. I want to continue working in my church camp system, coach youth to make them better people, and minister to all the youth at any church I visit, helping strengthen youth to help their community as well.
