Surrounded by vibrant colors, beautiful views, and energized people I find myself in awe of the incredible culture and establishments of a foreign land in which I myself am a foreigner. I marvel at each and every small detail of a lifestyle so different from my own and as each day progresses, I learn. I learn of a unique culture and a challenging language featuring a musical sound and rhythm. I learn by way of others and it is an undeniably incredible experience.
Though a gap year may have a different structure and purpose for each person, I view it as an opportunity to learn and grow without the strict checklist set forth by an educational institution. I feel as though one of the greatest ways to learn effectively is by engaging in community with a diverse group of people - immersing oneself into a different culture. Thus, if I were to enjoy a gap year, I would choose to travel. Traveling around the world provides an excellent pathway towards both learning of the views and lifestyles of others while also discovering and strengthening your own values and beliefs. In the midst of learning about others, a personal development occurs as new knowledge ignites thought and consideration that ultimately contribute to a set of unique beliefs as well as an open mind. Exercising an open minded approach to life while developing one’s own values in confidence prepares one for future workplace interactions and decisions that require the ability to recognize unique perspectives without sacrificing one’s convictions.
Learning such valuable skills through an experience of daily interaction with others reflecting various cultural beliefs evidences the power of a gap year. Taking full advantage of the freedom a year away from the traditional school pathway enables the discovery of individual talents and interests before pursuing a larger career goal. Travel during a gap year promotes immeasurable personal development, creating an unstoppable force that is ready to conquer.
