Learning by Henry - January 2018 Scholarship Essay
The ability to learn is a gift and the purpose of going to college is to gain knowledge about the field that you plan on going into. As Mahatma Gandhi once said “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever”. In this quote, Mahatma Gandhi explains that we must live life to the fullest and yearn for knowledge as if we had an eternity to master every aspect of every subject.
In college, we learn not only about the subjects that involve academia, but also about ourselves. In most cases, college is the first time for students being independent for such a long period of time. This allows for students to have more time to reflect on themselves, while being around others who are doing the same. An increase in perspective for your environment allows for further growth. College is a “melting pot” of ideals, beliefs, and knowledge just like the making of America.
The idea of universities was first formulated in 859 AD (2). However the idea has slightly changed since then and now provides more avenues of learning such as the career center and the counseling center. These centers provide further knowledge for students about not only their future careers but also themselves. These centers are essential to providing students real world experience in the field in order to help determine if the student truly wants to pursue that profession. College also now has more knowledge available for their students to learn from with the use of the internet.
