My Role Model by Henoke - March 2021 Scholarship Essay
As crazy as this might sound my academic role model is my wife. Most people would say their teachers, parents, or even a famous person; but for the past five years, my wife has surprised and inspired me in many ways. My wife came from Ethiopia about five years ago, in Ethiopia no matter what degree you have when you come to America it’s worthless.
But as soon as my wife came she went to school again right away; I knew from experience that it would be difficult to adjust to a new language and a whole different environment. About a year ago my wife’s father passed away by assassination, due to her father having a big role in Ethiopia her mother also had to go to jail for investigation. I knew exactly how my wife felt about her father passing away. I lost my father at a very young age. But even with all the chaos going on it didn’t stop her from continuing her schoolwork; staying up all night working on her school and studying and continuing to get all A’s.
Watching my wife being determined to her education made me sit down and ask myself why I wasn’t doing the same. I never liked school growing up, but now that I’m older I’ve realized that education is very important. Even if one day I lose my money, house, or even friends I will forever have my education. I decided to enroll at West La about a year ago, I wanted to be a changed person, I didn’t want to be the same person as I was in the past. I enrolled in many courses that would be beneficial for my career. I worked hard on my school work and started reading more. I became more open-minded and became wiser. I hope to find inspiration in myself one day and hope that others can find their inspiration from me.
